The famous kiel canal begins here, where it stretches some 60 scenic miles from the baltic to the north sea. the north sea-baltic canal, as it is formally named, took approximately 9,000 workers 8 years to build, and was officially opened in 1895.. Sailing from the netherland coast to the baltic, the kiel canal is the most frequented route by pleasure yachts. via the safe harbours borkum , helgoland , cuxhaven , the canal begins in brunsbuttel , elbe river and goes to kiel-holtenau , baltic.. Kiel is home to the world's busiest man-made canal, the 100-kilometer long nord-ostsee kanal (kiel canal), which connects the baltic with the north sea. you can cycle along the canal in its entirety or take a day trip; the bike path goes right along the water so you can ride side by side by side with giant container ships..
