Elmer’s island refuge is located approximately 50 miles south of new orleans, at the southern installing kayak and canoe launches, creating an hunting and commercial fishing is not allowed on the elmer’s island. sport fish found in the area include red drum, spotted sea trout, southern flounder, pompano, and blue crabs.. Fishing: elmer’s island is a popular fishing area for surf and bank fishing (from the access road). top species include blue crab, spotted and sand seatrout, sea catfish, red drum, and southern flounder.. The main benefit of fishing elmer’s is that you always have options. if the surf-fishing isn’t good you can try for reds and flounder in the marsh. if the marsh isn’t being productive, you can fish the bottom of the main channel for drum or specks, and if all else fails, you put some sand between your toes and relax..
